Student Council Boosts School Spirit

The St. Thomas More Student Council has been active in boosting school spirit and encouraging school and community service during the first few months of the school year.

Student Council members have been carrying out the recycling program for the school.

In addition, the organization sponsored the fall pep rally Monday, September 30, preceding the annual Monday Night Football Game. The pep rally honored 3rd through 8th grade fall athletes on the football teams, basketball teams, cross country team, swim team, and tennis team. The Student Council executive officers and the pep rally committee planned and carried out the pep rally. The cheerleaders added extra spirit to the pep rally, along with the Eagle portrayed by Charlie H. Students participated in competitions including Put Out, King Pen, Red Light - Green Light, and Tug-of-War. The pep rally culminated with a cheer competition among the grade levels. The 7th and 8th graders proved to be the loudest and were rewarded with spirit sticks.

The Student Council executive officers include Thomas W., president; Jack H., vice president; Sadie O., secretary; and Lucas W., treasurer. Other members of the pep rally committee were Kenny B., Audrey D., Grayson G., Landon G., Charlie H., Anna Claire J., Lexi K., Valeria O., Giselle P., Ian R., Ellie R., Paislee R., and Jude S..

Virtual Learning Day Contingency Plan

Three inclement weather days are built into our school calendar. We used these three days to close during Hurricane Francine. If there is a need for St. Thomas More to not be in school between now and the last day of school (May 23), we will have a virtual learning plan to meet requirements for the day to count as a school day. Teachers and/or the school office would communicate details and assignments to families by 8 a.m. of the virtual learning day.

Nurse's Notes

Disease of the week: Fifth disease. We continue to see cases of Fifth disease. Early symptoms may include low-grade fever, runny nose, muscles aches, and headache. In the next 4-14 days, a bright red rash appears on the cheeks, followed by a rash on the arms, trunk, and legs. The rash may disappear and reappear after exposure to heat for weeks. Unlike other illnesses, children are NO LONGER CONTAGIOUS once the rash appears. Adults that contract fifth disease may have painful, swollen joints with or without other symptoms. Pregnant women or people with certain blood disorders or immune deficiencies may require medical attention if infected.

Please sign and return Vision or Hearing Referral letters! In September, we conducted vision and hearing screenings in grades K, 1, 3, 5, and 7. If your child(ren) did not pass one of the screenings, you should have received a referral letter. Please sign and return the bottom portion of the letter to Nurse Rochelle. Second notices will be sent out soon. If you receive a second notice, this means that Nurse Rochelle did not receive the first letter signed by a parent. If your child(ren) passed the screenings, no notifications were made. Please email Nurse Rochelle if you have any questions at rochelle@stmbr.org.

OCTOBER is an ideal time to get your annual flu vaccinations! Flu vaccines have been shown to decrease the frequency of flu and the severity of flu cases in those vaccinated. In children, the flu vaccine has been shown to decrease flu-related hospitalization by 41% and emergency room visits by 50%.
