Mathcounts is an after school club open to 5th-8th graders. This club is facilitated by Mrs. Ann DeJean and Mrs. Michelle Smith and meets every Thursday from last dismissal until 4:15pm in Room 18 of the Jr. High.
In Mathcounts, students enjoy snacks, play math speed games, work individually and in groups, and most importantly, wrestle with challenging word problems which require close attention to detail, and have lots of fun!
In addition to the Thursday practice sessions, four Saturday Mathcounts are planned. On these days, students will participate in a practice competition, eat pizza, and play at the Youth House. A great time is had by all.
In February, a chosen team of our top 10 mathematicians will compete at LSU against 8-10 teams from other schools, both public and private. If we finish in the top three, four students will travel to Pineville, LA to compete in the state competition. We have competed at state three times in the last five years.
Mathcouts teaches thinking strategies, creativity, and problem solving skills. In addition, Mathcounts members get a great shirt and learn that challenging themselves mathematically is fun and rewarding.
